An aging roof with missing shingles left this Pittsburgh home vulnerable to water intrusion and continued deterioration. The exact installation date of the original roof was unknown, but its condition showed that it had reached the end of its expected service life. My Pittsburgh Roofing replaced the full 16-square roof with a GAF Timberline HDZ system in Hickory and upgraded the ventilation, leak protection, and flashing details.
Project Overview
Location: Pittsburgh, PA 15204
Property: Two-story single-family home
Project: Full roof replacement
Approximate roof size: 16 squares
Existing roof: Aged 3-tab asphalt shingles with missing areas
New roofing: GAF Timberline HDZ
Color: Hickory
Installation time: 2 working days
The Challenge
The existing 3-tab shingles had deteriorated normally over time, and several were already missing. Although the inspection did not reveal unusual structural problems, the exposed and weakened areas increased the risk of damage to the materials beneath. Because deterioration affected the roof as a whole, replacement provided a more dependable solution than isolated shingle repairs.
Inspection and Project Plan
After removing the old roof, our crew installed premium underlayment and targeted leak protection at vulnerable transitions. Starter shingles, GAF Timberline HDZ field shingles, and matching ridge caps formed the new finished surface. Intake and ridge ventilation were included to support airflow, while step flashing, chimney flashing, and pipe flashings protected the roof’s penetrations and wall connections.
