Roof, Gutter and Ventilation Upgrade in Pittsburgh
A Pittsburgh homeowner believed the roof had been replaced in 2020, but the inspection showed that a second layer of shingles had been installed over the original roof. The home also experienced excessive attic heat, and the front porch roof and gutter system needed attention. My Pittsburgh Roofing removed both roofing layers and rebuilt the exterior system with new GAF shingles, improved ventilation, and new seamless aluminum gutters.
Project Overview
Location: Pittsburgh, PA 15210
Property: Two-story residential home
Project: Full roof replacement, gutter replacement, and ventilation improvements
Approximate roof size: 10 squares
Approximate gutter length: 126 linear feet
Existing condition: Two layers of 3-tab asphalt shingles
New roofing: GAF Timberline HDZ
Color: Biscayne Blue
Installation time: 2 working days
The Challenge
Installing new shingles over old ones can hide the condition beneath and does not provide the same opportunity to inspect the roof deck, underlayment, or flashing. On this home, the double layer also added removal work and contributed to uncertainty about the roof’s actual condition. The homeowner additionally reported that the upper floor and attic became very hot in summer, pointing to inadequate exhaust ventilation.
Inspection and Project Plan
The plan called for a complete tear-off down to the roof deck, including removal of both shingle layers. After the exposed deck was evaluated, the crew installed GAF Deck-Armor underlayment, StormGuard leak protection, starter and ridge-cap shingles, ridge ventilation, drip edge, and gutter apron. GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Biscayne Blue created the finished roof, while approximately 126 linear feet of seamless aluminum gutters and new downspouts restored controlled drainage.
Work Completed
Removal and disposal of two existing shingle layers
Deck inspection after full tear-off
GAF Deck-Armor premium underlayment
GAF StormGuard ice-and-water protection
Starter shingles and matching ridge-cap shingles
GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Biscayne Blue
New ridge ventilation
Drip edge and gutter apron
Approximately 126 linear feet of seamless aluminum gutters
New downspouts and final inspection
Final Result
The home now has a true replacement roof rather than another layer over aging materials. Improved ridge ventilation helps release attic heat, and the new gutters direct water away from the roofline more effectively. The Biscayne Blue shingles also created a clear curb-appeal upgrade. The full roofing and gutter scope was completed in two working days and verified through the final project inspection.
