Roof Replacement After Asbestos Abatement in Verona
This Verona home needed more than a routine roof replacement. The aging roof had missing materials, active leaks, damaged decking, poor ventilation, deteriorated fascia, and an asbestos-containing roofing surface that required specialized removal. My Pittsburgh Roofing first protected the home with a full-roof tarp, then coordinated the roofing schedule around testing and abatement performed by a qualified asbestos-removal contractor. After the old material was safely removed, our crew rebuilt the roof and gutter system.
Project Overview
Location: Verona, PA 15147
Property: Single-story residential home
Project: Emergency tarping, full roof replacement, gutters, ventilation, and fascia work
Approximate roof size: 16 squares
Approximate gutter length: 176 linear feet
Existing roof: Approximately 50-year-old asbestos-containing slate or tile roofing
New roofing: GAF Timberline HDZ asphalt shingles
Color: Pewter Gray
Installation time: 4 working days, excluding weather and abatement coordination
The Challenge
The roof had been neglected for an extended period and was estimated to be about 50 years old. Missing roofing materials and a hole near the bathroom allowed water into the home. The decking showed rot, ventilation was inadequate, portions of the fascia and soffit were damaged, and the gutter system leaked and drained poorly. Heavy rain increased the risk of additional interior damage while the owner waited for asbestos testing and removal.
Inspection and Project Plan
Because asbestos-containing roofing requires specialized handling, our crew did not disturb the material during the temporary protection phase. We covered the entire roof with a tarp to reduce water entry until the owner’s abatement contractor completed the required removal. Once the structure was ready for roofing, we repaired the affected wood components and installed a modern asphalt-shingle system with leak protection, intake ventilation, flashing, new gutters, and downspouts.
Work Completed
Full-roof emergency tarping before abatement
Schedule coordination with the owner's qualified asbestos-removal contractor
Roof decking repair where deterioration was found
Ice-and-water leak barrier
Starter shingles and GAF Timberline HDZ field shingles
Matching ridge-cap shingles
New intake ventilation
Drip edge and gutter apron
Chimney flashing and pipe flashings
Fascia or soffit repair
Approximately 176 linear feet of seamless aluminum gutters
New downspouts, cleanup, and final inspection
Final Result
The home changed dramatically. The active leak conditions were addressed, the new roof and ventilation improved protection and comfort, and the replacement gutters now carry water away from the structure more effectively. Pewter Gray shingles gave the property a cleaner, more current appearance, while repaired fascia and a complete drainage system helped restore an exterior that had looked severely deteriorated. The completed work was inspected after installation and observed after rainfall.
