Unfortunately, when leaky roofs occur, homeowners ask, “how to detect and patch a roof leak.”

Most of our customers here in Pittsburgh, PA, prefer asphalt shingles. In fact, the popularity of asphalt shingles is high across the board. According to Consumer Reports, they are so common because they last longer and blend well with most homes.

The majority of asphalt roofing shingles are constructed with improvements in mind. Most brands include climate-related efficiencies such as:

  • Wind-resistance
  • Fire Protection
  • Long-lasting performance

Needless to say, all shingles leak at times. There are warning signs that all homeowners should be aware of.

We have answers on how to detect and patch a roof leak.

How to Detect and Patch a Roof Leak
4 Proven Steps

Temporary fixes may be easier than you think, but calling a professional and licensed roofer is something you want to consider, first, in most cases.

Whether you hire a professional or do it yourself, here are the critical steps to follow:

#1 – Find the Roof Leak

If you have a leak, you’ll most likely notice stains on your ceiling or your attic. Using a pair of binoculars to investigate outside and a flashlight in your attic are helpful tools. We offer free inspections.

  • When in your attic, use your flash light on a rainy day, as it will reflect light.
  • When outside, look for missing, curled, or cracked shingles.
  • Also ensure caulking and flashing have not been compromised.
  • Check the tent-shaped shingles that cover the peaks of the roof.

#2 – Fix Curled and Cracked Shingles

Most homeowners do not have asphalt roofing cement on hand. Our customers usually contact us to handle the leaks because of this. However, if you prefer to DIY, you will need:

  • A caulk gun.
  • Putty knife.
  • Roofing cement (from Lowes or Home Depot)
  • Apply a good amount underneath the problemed shingle before pressing down firmly to set it.

#3 – Missing or Damaged Shingles Need to Be Replaced

Damaged shingles of any kind need replacing. Look for the following red flags:

  • Cracked or rotten shingles.
  • Spots on the roof without shingles.

How to remove and replace a roof shingle:

  • Lift the shingles by removing nails with a pry bar.
  • Remove the cement by scraping it away.
  • Replace the shingle by putting the new shingle into position by using 6d galvanized roofing nails to secure in each corner.
  • Use the roof cement to cover the nails.

#4 – Repair or Fix the Flashing

Metal flashing around chimneys and dormers are well-known for leakage. All you have to do is reseal the joints by using roofing cement. Simply fill a caulk gun with the cement and apply it with a putty knife.
